geomagnetic storms?

Is anyone looking at the natural hazard of Geomagnetic Storms? A member of our team brought up this storm from 1859. It caused fires by creating electric currents in telegraph wires. Just wondering if any other sites are looking at this.

Geography matters a lot for this event. If you are on or near large graphite areas, you should be worried. If you are in the Pacific Northwest, not a big deal.

It depends. Columbia did a study about 10 years ago about geo storm susceptibility and found that our location is ideal to supress the effects. So, we are not including it as vulnerability.

Using "Business Continuity" to document 24-003 Resiliency in fleet governance

We are looking for the right place to embed Resiliency in our fleet governance, as I'm sure you are too. We are wondering how many fleets are going to use existing Business Continuity governance as the home for resiliency.

The objectives of our Business Continuity Program are to ensure approved response strategies and recovery priorities are in place for critical processes/functions if an incident results in Staffing Unavailability, Facility Impairment or Loss, Information Technology (IT), Communication, Computer Systems or other tools Unavailable/ Data Loss, and Unavailability of Critical Suppliers or Services. This includes having Enterprise-Wide Business Continuity Assessments to address incidents that impact multiple Business Units.

We think this is a natural fit to embed Resiliency and the work we are embarking on for 24-003 and are looking to hear feedback from others.

August 2024 Updates & Reminders

INPO 24-003 Revision 1 was issued July 31. The only change was to update the due date for the climate vulnerability assessments in Appendix B from March 31, 2025, to September 30, 2025. This will be highlighted in the August edition of INPO Insights.
The first of our monthly teaching & learning webcasts is scheduled for August 13 at 1pm ET. The invite was sent last month following the Summit meeting to all attendees. We have a few updates from INPO to share and an industry presentation on seasonal readiness walkdowns. If you need the invite, send me a note at DuketteGV@inpo.org.
The climate vulnerability assessment working group is meeting August 20 to finalize the Climate Vulnerability Matrix and discuss walkdown pre-job briefs. NOTE: This meeting is for a separate working group but I'm sharing for your awareness. Contact Martin Nganga with any questions. NgangaAW@inpo.org

Thanks Scott. Looking forward to the forum. I will be interested in discussing the integration of resiliency into processes so that we are adding depth/margin to current processes and preparing the plant to be reliable in the face of more extreme challenges. OPG is responding to 24-002 and creating a robust plan. We can also talk about resilience with respect to other known threats. I will be looking to discuss how utilities are preparing for the unknown, and programs/processes that routinely assess emerging risks as part of a sustainable program. Risks introduced via our connection to the grid is currently relevant to us, having recently had a significant event due to a component failure in the grid-controlled switchyard. How we influence their resiliency would be a good discussion point.
